Yesterday, the video for Marianas Trench's fantastic song "Fallout" which is one of the most requested songs on KOOL FM right now.
I was eagerly awaiting the video for this song because the previews, with massive explosions etc., looked pretty cool. And, well, Marianas Trench have been putting out some great videos lately, like this one:
I've said it before and I will say it again: I just love the music of Marianas Trench and I think Josh Ramsay is one of the most talents writers and composers in pop music right now.
I have yet to kick my addiction to the album Ever After (I'm pretty sure Rumours by Fleetwood Mac would help but I can't find my copy so....).
I introduced my best friend, Michelle, to their music when Masterpiece Theatre came out. She, as well, is now a huge fan.
So, when I watched the video for Fallout and wasn't sure I liked it, I asked her to sit in my dining room and watch it as well (as she had come over to pick me up for our Barrielicious Girls' Night Out).
Her feeling was the same as mine, but not for the same reasons. We both aren't sure we really like this video. And that's something for two people who are addicted to the music of this band.
I don't need to describe the whole video for you. Just watch! (If the above stops working, * CLICK HERE * for the video)
"Fallout" is the most dramatic video Marianas Trench has made. And it was made very well. The visuals are stunning.
I have two issues with the video.
First, the domestic abuse in the video makes me uncomfortable. Josh has the girl backed up against the wall, is yelling at her, slams his hand against the wall..... then kisses her? And she kisses back. In another scene, she slaps him during an argument. Why that necessary? (It's not.)
My second issue is with the story line. Well, it was at first. My initial thoughts were this: On it's own, this is a good video. But, the guys in the band have made a point of telling a story with the album Ever After. Recently, Ian said that the videos they do for this album will, all together, tell a story.
The above video for "Haven't Had Enough" follows the toyland/evil queen story that they wrote about in the Ever After booklet. The "Fallout" video, in this light, doesn't seem to fit. Why is the stranger in love with the Evil Queen? Why does she have the key that Porcelain is supposed to have? Etc etc.
But, the more I think about it, it works. One cannot expect the band to tell the story in the same way every video. There must be an artistic license with, well, art! So, I can go with this version of the story.
As for my best friend, her thoughts were, "I think Josh is trying to be a sex symbol in this video. I mean, I find him sexy but he's not a 'sex symbol'. He's more of a funny guy." and, "It doesn't showcase the whole band enough." Good point.
Over all, good video but I've like some of their other ones a lot more.
