    • FATAL ACCIDENT

      Barrie Police say there was a three car accident at the intersection of Georgian Drive and Penetanguishene Road around 11 o'clock Sunday morning.   One man was rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.  A woman was rushed to St. Mike's Hospital in Toronto with serious injuries. 


      400 SOUTHBOUND RE-OPENED

      The OPP report a garbage truck caught fire early Monday morning in the southbound lanes of the 400 between highways 88 and 89.  Fire crews decided the truck's load needed to be dumped to put the fire out property.  They moved the vehicle, albeit very slowly to the commuter parking lot at highway 88 where the contents were to be dumped out and extinguished. The southbound lanes finally re-opened shortly after 8 a.m.

    • NOISY PARTIES IN BARRIE

      Weapons and noice complaints in Barrie's Southend.  Police were on their way when they say a frustrated neighbour decided to try to break up the party by himself.  He  put on a Hells Angels support shirt, picked up a wooden martial arts sword and off he went down the street. Poloice arrived before anyone got hurt, charged him with weapons dangerous, the host of the party was given a 4 hundred and 90 dollar fine.  Police add that in a 24 hour period this weekend they had to respond to 27 noisy party complaints.


      DEADLY PLANE CRASH IN TOTTENHAM

      A plane crash near Caledon has killed a King City man.  Officials were called when 54-year-old John Townsend didn’t return home after an early morning flight yesterday in Tottenham.  The planes wreckage was found around 7:45 p.m. by York Regional police pilots.

    • MORE SPACE TO 'GO'

      You now have more parking at Barrie’s new Go Station.  This week they opened up 200 more spaces and hope to have a new building on the lot opening later this year.  Ridership on the system has grown by almost 45% since it started in December.


      A BIG WEST NILE VICTIM

      A horse has tested positive for West Nile Virus in Calvin, Ontario.  Officials say they are now testing the mosquitoes in the North Bay Parry Sound area again.  Up till now the insects have tested negative.


      HURRAY FOR THE LIFEJACKET

      A lifejacket probably saved a 29-year-old Barrie man Friday.  Police found the cold and tired swimmer about 2 km off the shore of Big Bay Point after the man got separated from his friends. It took almost an hour to find him, but he is expected to be fine.

       


    • HOME INVASION IN BLUE MOUNTAIN

      A man assaulted in a home invasion in The Town of The Blue Mountains. It happened just after 7 this morning on Water Street. Police say an unknown lone suspect forced his way into a residence, assaulted the home owner, demanded money and his car keys then drove off. The victim was transported to Collingwood General and Marine. His condition is unknown at this time. The suspect is described as 6 feet, between 20 and 30-years-old, wearing a dark tilly hat, hoody and dark pants. The vehicle is a 2003 Black Oldsmobile Alero license plate B B Z A  526


      SPEEDING PINHEADS

      Barrie Police arrested two men from out of province early Friday morning.  H.E.A.T. team officer watched the two racing their cars in the area near Anne and Dunlop Streets, they squealed their tires and took off at ridiculous speeds down the street.  They pulled them over, charged them with stunt driving, licences suspended and cars impounded for 7 days and they earned themselves a minimum 4 figure fine.


      HERSHEYS RECALL

      People with an allergy or sensitivity to Almonds should not consume Hershey’s Chocolate Shell Topping. The product contains almonds that are not listed on the label. The voluntary recall involves Hershey’s 7 and ¼ ounce bottles of “Chocolate Shell Topping”. Consumers who have purchased the Hershey's product should contact the company's consumer relations at, 1-800-468-1714.


      PIZZA BREAK-IN

      Barrie Police learned of a break-in at a local pizza palace early Friday morning.  They responded to a call at Dino's Pizza on Bayfield Street and brought along the canine unit.  The culprit not exactly fleet of foot, they found him a short distance away carrying the store's cash register.  A 41 year old man of no fixed address was arrested and charged.


      CAMERAS AT BALM BEACH

      Southern Georgian Bay OPP mean business, That’s why they’ve installed a closed circuit television system in the Balm Beach Area. Police say the camera will not only make area residents safer, but it will also help police do their job more effectively should a criminal offence take place. The “Safe Communities, A Secure Ontario”, goal is a commitment to public safety in the Balm Beach Area and evidence that police are dedicated to resolving the issues, which at times, have tarnished the area.      

    • FAKE CREDIT CARDS SEIZED

      Barrie Police say three men went into a local business Wednesday and attempted to purchase a computer using a fraudulent credit card.  When the card was declined, they completed the sale using several gift cards.  Staff were suspicious so they called the Cops.  Police found the trio in the parking lot.  A quick investigation turned up 20 fake credit cards, a whack of gift cards purchased on phony credit plus an assortment of computer equipment. All three men are from Nigeria and faces numerous charges.


      NEW WIRELESS NETWORK

      Not happy with your current cell phone provider, then it may be of interest to you that a new company is on the way.   At a news conference earlier today in Toronto, Globalive Communications Inc. announced they’ll hit the market by mid 2009, becoming the Country’s fourth national wireless service. Globalive won the licenses in a government auction earlier this summer. The company, based out of Toronto, spent over $440 million on the licenses. They are now looking for input from you the user.       CHEESE ADDED TO RECALL

      Another food added the listeriosis recall list. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Ivanhoe Cheese are warning people not to eat cheeses with best before dates of Feb. 20, 2009 to March 1, 2009. The cheese was distributed across Ontario between Aug. 20th and Sept. 3, 2008. The brand names include: Ivanhoe, Great Canadian, Cheddar, Marble (both brick and cheddar), Asiago, Gouda, Swiss, Parmesan, Mozzarella, Havarti, Colby, Brick and  Feta, package sizes. Meanwhile, you can go back to eating your mushrooms now. The Canadian Food Inspection agency says that Ravine Mushrooms, who recalled their mushrooms just a few days ago, have taken the steps needed to insure the publics safety.


      BRACEBRIDGE DOGNAPPING

      The OPP say thieves snatched a tiny puppy from a business in Bracebridge on Tuesday.  The little shih tzu was small enough to stick in a pocket, expensive as well with a value around $1,500.  Police received a good description of the thieves and their vehicle, tracked them down a short time later.  Inside the car they found the little critter stuffed under a seat, he was returned to his owner safe and sound.  Two women, a 39 year old from Huntsville and a 20 year old from Dwight, as well as a 16 year old minor were arrested and charged.


      BARRIE ROOF FRAUD

      Barrie Police issued a warrant Wednesday for the owner/operator of a company called Barrie Roof.  It's alleged he stiffed clients once payment was received, not finishing or even starting work on their properties. He's been charged with fraud over and under $5,000 and mischief to property.  Police believe there are more victims out there, if you have any information about Barrie Roof, call the Barrie Police Fraud Unit.

    • REWARD IN UNSOLVED MURDER

      A $50,000 reward being offered in a brutal unsolved murder case. Earlier this morning, OPP held a news conference asking for information leading to the arrest for the murder of 13 year old Leah Sousa and the attack of her mother. It happened back on the night of Friday August 31st 1990 in the Cumberland Beach Area.  Police say that Leah and her mother Lora were asleep in their home when the vicious attack occurred. Leah was severely beaten, her mother suffered severe head injuries. Leah’s body was found out in the yard the next morning by a friend. Lora’s 9 month old son was unharmed. The case has been described as one of the most brutal, violent unsolved murder cases in Ontario. The Lead investigator in the case released the detail from a Command Post set up today in Cumberland Beach, all while OPP searched a nearby bush. The search was being conducted in response to a tip from the public about the possibility of evidence in the bush area.       BARRIE GRIFTERS

      Police report a gang of organized thieves targeted three different women in Barrie on Tuesday.  They all had the some story, they were shopping in local supermarkets when they were approached by a spanish speaking person, during the confusion someone else snuck up and stole their purses from the shopping carts. The thieves then took the credit cards and bought gift certificates and phone cards at local department stores, all before the women knew their cards were missing.   The suspects are described as two men and two women, 30 to 40 years old, all hispanic.   Police say they have good video evidence but if you have any information that could help their investigation call Barrie police or Crimestoppers.


      ORILLIA COLD CASE

      Orillia OPP are holding a news conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss details of the 18 year old unsolved murder of Leah Sousa in Cumberland Beach.  Sousa was killed during an attack on September 1st, 1990, her mother also severely hurt in the incident. A reward is being offered for new information that could lead to an arrest in the case, they're also setting up a new command post in the area.


      MUSHROOM RECALL

      The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Ravine Mushroom Farms of Woodbridge are recalling their Fresh Obsessions brand Ready to Serve Pre-sliced Mushrooms from store shelves.  They have concerns about possible listeria bacterium in the product. The CFIA says no cases of illness have been reported from these mushrooms but the company wants to put safety first.  The product is in 8 ounce containers and has the lot code R12398.
