CANADA IS UP TO 7 MEDALS, PHELPS IS AT 8

Canada won 4 medals at the Beijing Olympics Saturday.
Gold - the men's 8 rowing - the men's team consists of Ben Rutledge of Cranbrook, B.C., Kevin Light of Sidney, B.C., Malcolm Howard of Victoria, Andrew Byrnes of Toronto, Wetzel of Saskatoon, Dominic Seiterle of Victoria, Adam Kreek of London, Ont., and Hamilton of Richmond, B.C.


The Women's 8's rowing including Newmarket's Sarah Bonikowsky - 4th, just missing the bronze as the Netherlands surged ahead at the line.

Canada has a bronze in the Women’s lightweight double sculls with Melanie Kok  and Tracy Cameron.

Bronze in the men’s lightweight 4’s crewed by Iain Brambell, Jon Beare, Mike Lewis and Liam Parsons.

Bronze for 19-year-old Ryan Cochrane in the 1500 m freestyle. First pool win for Canada since 2000 in Sydney.

 Of note: American swimmer Michael Phelps won his 8th gold medal in the U.S. team's win of the 400 m medley relay.  The gold medal beats Mark Spitz's 35 year 7 gold medal record.

 

Sunday, Blyth Haley placed 4th in the 3 m diving competition.
