Big Brother is not watching yet, but the Barrie Police Services Board has asked Chief Mark Neelin to review the matter with various interest groups. Neelin, and Board Chair Doug Jure, say a number of issues need to be addressed, including personal privacy - some downtown merchants are opposed to the cameras, cost - not just for installation but for monitoring as well, and liability - in the event a crime is not caught on camera. Both Neelin and Jure agree the cameras may not be a deterrent to some crimes, but could be of benefit in identifying the perpetrator of, and circumstances surrounding a crime. Neelin is to report back to the board on September 28.
