There was much prodding to get Queen's Park to allow mixed martial arts prizefighting in Ontario. Now that it's relented, the Canadian Medical Association is lobbying to have MMA banned across the country. It says the sport puts fighters at risk of severe head trauma and other injuries that could have long term effects. Some delegates argued such injuries happen in hockey and skiing, too, but there’s no effort to ban those sports. Those in favour were quick to fire back that, unlike hockey and skiing, the intent of mixed martial arts is to incapacitate one’s opponent.
