Getting a mark of zero for a late assignment won't be a given in Ontario high schools this fall, but it will be an option. New guidelines from the Ministry of Education will allow teachers to hand out a zero to students who miss deadlines, but Debbie Clarke at the Simcoe County District School Board told KOOL FM NEWS it’s at the bottom of a long list of options which include helping students develop better time management skills and helping them be mindful of specific deadlines during the school year, even extentuating circumstances are considered. In the past, many school boards have been reluctant, in fact, would not allow teachers to give a mark of zero. Instead, a late assignment would be noted on the work habit portion of a student’s report card, not on their academic grade.
